A carved and painted Simon
Held the cross,
And took the whip as well,
His body there in bas-relief
A doubled acolyte
Whose lacquered blood betrayed
A woodgrain flesh beneath it,
A blue-eyed boy to watch
His jejune sacrifice,
Just like the year before.

His cowlick scattered rays
To hold coronas,
And his backpack
In a classroom
Full of homework
Never done.
Today it’s math,
Tomorrow it’s a joint
Just past the playground,
A mumbled prayer
Then move along
And no one knows the wiser.
A little disappointment
In the eucharist’s okay.

The bricks,
They’ve heard a thousand times
I’ll do my best,
And porous as they are,
They soak it up.
