If only I were strong and
I could shoulder these concessions.
If only I were stone enough
To hold the weight alone
I would’ve taken it from you
And maybe all the little cracks
And fissure would’ve stayed
And you’d be standing.

If only I’d have known how
Much you held above me.
But now the weight’s too much,
And so I long for rain and wind
To wear me down till I no longer
Have to prop this weeping
Roof and shore these listing walls
That we’d assumed would
Not so soon erode,
That we thought would
Weather fine in winter,
But it’s winter now
And now I realize
I should’ve shouldered
More when you were here
Because it’s clear this weight
Is just too onerous to hold
