Into the night

Into the night,
Where more forgiving witnesses
Allow me to pretend the deficit is shrinking.
Into the night when I can shy from days I can’t return.
Into the night,
Where silence writes so well that
I no longer need to tell this fiction,
So I sit and read alone in dereliction
Of a cause to speak.

Into the night,
Where I can be a murmur
Breathed below the eulogy for sunrise.
Into the night when I can envy brighter eyes.
Into the night,
Where air is thick with ink
Of memoirs never written,
Sketches long erased of
Images I hoped were me

Into the night,
Where I can salvage just a remnant
Of the vision lost in sleeping
Into the night when I can lie awake to dream.
Into the night,
Where lies are mild and truths
Are dust unlit on window glass
Affording only views from outside,
So I stay inside and feign
I’m not the one exposed.
